CONSTRUCTION

Bernadette, a Peter Kass designed Down East style power boat, built by John’s Bay Boat Company in 2005.

Her Nibs’s hull is Maine cedar planking over white oak framing and keel. All fastenings are bronze. Decks are marine plywood, epoxy-fiberglass sheathed, and overlaid 5/8” teak. Toe rails, guards, transom planking, and exterior trim are also teak. The trunk cabin and wheelhouse roof are marine plywood sheathed with epoxy fiberglass and painted with Awl Grip. The wheelhouse is built of Honduras mahogany, which is painted on the exterior and varnished inside. Interior joiner work is also mahogany.

MECHANICAL

Power is a YANMAR GLPA-STP rated at 315 HP at 3600 RPM. To date, the engine has only 949 hours. An AQUAMET 22, 1 3/4” propeller shaft drives a 24”x24” 4 blade bronze propeller. Fuel capacity is 110 gallons in a single tank. Fresh water is stored in two 40 gallon tanks. There is a 12 gallon engine-heated hot water heater.

The electrical system includes two 4D batteries and a XANTRAX 2000 watt inverter charger. Electronics include an ICOM VHF, SIMRAD autopilot, search light, and a brand new GARMIN radar, GPS, and sounder system installed in 2020.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The cabin has comfortable accommodations for two. Spacious V-berths are forward, with a full galley to port. Storage space and an enclosed head with sink are to starboard. The galley features a propane cooktop, microwave oven, and refrigerator. There is an outside shower in the cockpit. The wheelhouse has a settee on the port side that seats four and a handsome console to starboard houses navigation and electrical equipment.

Her Nibs’s most notable feature is her large cockpit. It is surrounded by elegant teak coaming, which wraps around a horseshoe-shaped bench with raised panel construction.
