HISTORY

Boatbuilding has fascinated Peter Kass since childhood and his love of the work and interest in the trade is still as strong as it was over 30 years ago.

Peter began his boatbuilding training in 1978 at the Harvey Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol, Maine. He was fortunate enough to work with a small group of experienced old-timers, all over the age of sixty, who readily shared their knowledge of boat work. When the Harvey Gamage yard switched entirely to steel construction, Peter took a job at Goudy and Stevens in East Boothbay. At Goudy and Stevens, his duties ranged from large scale repair jobs on draggers to working in the joiner shop. In 1982, he was hired on at Padebco Custom Boats in Round Pond to help build a 30' Atkin Cutter. Soon after, Peter stepped out on his own and opened John's Bay Boat Company in 1983.

[Peter’s] known for meticulous work, a high-caliber crew, integrity in design and construction, and gorgeous carpentry.”
